As I began writing this book I reflected on humanity’s need to reverse the impacts of climate change and ecosystem decline. Our era of perfect storms with simple names – Katrina, Harvey, Irma – makes the consequences of environmental degradation visible, yet stealth denial and ecological unconsciousness of the truth regarding climate change are nonetheless acceptable. The role of the corporate entity and conventional economic theory in shaping business attitudes that value profit maximisation at any cost has led to the pursuit of strategies which are resource anaemic – inefficient in a worst-case scenario or carbon myopic – focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions at best.
