You now know the employees who have critical knowledge and the knowledge they have. During this step, you select methods for capturing the knowledge, based upon a variety of factors: knowledge type, timing, and number of knowledge holders. Different types of knowledge lend themselves to different methods for capture and transfer. To begin, classify the critical knowledge by type.

Types of skills and knowledge are categorized in a variety of ways. For simplicity, we’ll categorize knowledge into two types:
