A spreadsheet is a document designed to work with numbers. You can use a spreadsheet to store numeric data, but most spreadsheets come into their own when you create special entries called formulas that calculate results. Formulas can be as simple as adding two or more numbers and as complex as calculating the monthly payment for a loan given the principal, interest rate, and term.

Your Mac comes with a spreadsheet app called (appropriately, if uninspiringly) Numbers, which lets you not only store and calculate numeric values but also add text (either as data or to help describe what the spreadsheet does), dates, and times.
