26.1 Introduction
In the foregoing chapters many aspects of image analysis and recognition have been studied. At the core of these matters has been the concept of segmentation, which involves the splitting of images into regions that have some degree of uniformity, whether in intensity, color, texture, depth, motion, or other relevant attributes. Care was taken in Chapter 4 to emphasize that such a process will be largely ad hoc, since the boundaries produced will not necessarily correspond to those of real objects.
