HOOKING UP A MIDI KEYBOARD
You can wile away the hours by playing mixmaster with the thousands of loops within GarageBand, but eventually you'll probably want to play and record your own music. You can play GarageBand's excellent Software Instruments using GarageBand's built-in onscreen keyboard, but it isn't the most ergonomic solution for playing music.
If you have bought an electronic music keyboard or synthesizer in the last 10 years, chances are that the thing is MIDI compatible. Without going into what exactly MIDI is, just look on the back of the keyboard for one or two little round connectors with five holes in it.
