Chapter 3
Installation and Setup
In This Chapter
- Identifying information you'll need
- Formatting storage
- Considering the differences between a new install, upgrade, and migration
- Performing different types of installation
- Checking DNS and other postconfiguration tasks
- Deciding when to update Lion Server
This chapter is kind of important. Installing Lion Server is very different from installing previous versions of Mac OS X Server — or any other operating system you've ever installed. Frankly, it's an odd bird. Getting it wrong the first time can result in lots of wasted time later. Whether you've previously installed Mac OS X Server or this is your first foray into the world of computer servers, you really should know some things about Lion Server before double-clicking the installer.
This chapter looks at the three phases of creating a functional server: things to do to get ready, the actual installation process and its options and variations, and initial setup tasks that you perform afterward.
