Over the past several decades, an increasing number of longitudinal data sets have become publicly available that would be of interest to researchers studying aging (Boslaugh, 2007). As an interdisciplinary field, gerontology is the study of health and social aspects of aging. Many of these studies represent the culmination of a major investment of resources and the collaboration of multiple agencies or institutions, and they represent an unprecedented opportunity for researchers.
