Adenosine
A neurotransmitter that promotes sleep. It is lowest in the morning and increases with each waking hour.
Adipose cells
Your body fat is made up of these cells—they can be the white or brown type.
Adrenaline
Powerful hormone that boosts heart and breathing rates; main player in the body’s fight-or-flight response.
Amygdala
Almond-shaped cluster of cells in the brain’s limbic system. Involved in threat detection, triggering fear responses, formimg emotional memories, and strengthening learning.
Antioxidants
Chemicals in the body and in foodstuffs that neutralize waste known as free radicals.
Basal ganglia
Brain structure that controls habitual, autopilot behaviors (your procedural memory).
