Everyone seems to agree that sex isn’t as popular as it used to be. Are we too busy, too tired—or just too much in thrall to our smartphones to make time for intimacy?
Survey after survey confirms we are having less sex than ever before. Since the 1990s, couples have been increasingly finding the bedroom an intimacy-parched zone. Rates of teenage pregnancy have plummeted across developed nations in line with this apparent lack of libido: the fraction of people making love at least once a week fell from 45 percent in 2000 to 36 percent in 2016 in the US—and this “sex drought” has many people worried.
