Requirement Defined

I want to take a moment to provide a bit more definition and discussion about what a requirement is before we proceed. The BABOK Guide v. 3 defines requirement as

A requirement is a usable representation of a need. Requirements focus on understanding what kind of value could be delivered if a requirement is fulfilled. The nature of the representation may be a document (or a set of documents) but can vary widely depending on the circumstances.

Note that the need is not where the requirement ends. The definition goes on to focus on understanding the value. Stakeholders will often cite a requirement that you find does not truly solve the business need. Recall the discussion of the 5 Why’s in
