$PATH When you try to enter a command on the (Linux or Mac) command line, your computer needs to know where it can look for the instructions related to that command. The $PATH variable is a list of all the directories where the command line should look for instructions related to a given command.

absolute path In a file system, an absolute path gives the full path to a file or directory, starting with the root directory.
