Chapter 7. Dapr’s Future

Dapr is still a young project. From its creation, it has aimed at being an open, vendor-neutral runtime that is helpful and nonintrusive. The future of Dapr will be shaped by the collective efforts of the entire Dapr community. Everyone is encouraged to join the community and to contribute new ideas and code.

As two of the first developers, the authors of this book have had the privilege to discuss Dapr’s future with many different people coming from different perspectives. The goal of this chapter is to capture some of the ideas that have been shared, and hopefully to inspire new ideas and new application scenarios.

This chapter organizes the ideas about Dapr’s future into several broad categories: capability delivery, actors, edge computing, and more. For each of the categories, it first presents the underlying rationales or trains of thought and then introduces some specific features inspired by these thoughts. In all cases, these are just a few examples of directions that Dapr is or may be heading in.
