Abstract
Surface texturing, that is, introducing specific patterns on sliding surfaces, is a well-known approach to improve the tribological properties of mechanical components. In this chapter, the concept and tribological effects of “surface texturing” are introduced. Then, by comparing texturing techniques, the versatility, advantages, and limitations of laser surface texturing (LST) are demonstrated. Then it summarizes the laser ablation behaviors of typical materials such as metals, ceramics, and hard coatings. Finally, a brief review is made about the application of LST ...
