6.4    OPTICAL AND MECHANICAL TOLERANCES

We have shown how the principles of geometrical optics can be applied to design reflective and refractive systems that transform the irradiance profiles of collimated laser beams. For the important special case of rotationally symmetric input and output profiles, the problem of designing the optical elements can be reduced to a pair of integral equations with exactly two solutions, such as Equations 6.80 and 6.87 for the refractive beam shaper. It is not difficult to solve these equations to any desired numerical precision, thus obtaining a prescription for a set of lenses or mirrors that exactly solves the beam shaping problem.
