The structure is as follows.

  • The top tier, such as browser, is the user interface on the client computer.

  • The middle tier, such as web server, contains the application’s business logic. A leftward arrow labeled, X H T M L, points from the web server to the browser.

  • The bottom tier contains the application’s data, typically in a database. A double headed arrow labeled, J D B C, is between web server and database.
