YET ANOTHER TERM: GATEWAY

Earlier discussions in this chapter introduced the term gateway. This term has more than one meaning; indeed, some vendors use the term in some of their commercial product names. I first came across the term when I was working with the old ARPAnet (now the Internet). It was used to describe a node in the ARPAnet that connected a user into the ARPAnet backbone. This node was called a gateway. One of the functions of the gateway node was to perform route discovery operations on behalf of a user node. These early route discovery protocols were called gateway protocols.
