INTERNETWORKING DEFINITIONS
The term internetworking unit (IWU) is used to describe a machine that performs relaying (and perhaps route discovery) functions between networks.
Networks are often called subnetworks (or subnets), as shown in Figure 1-1. The term does not mean that they provide fewer functions than a conventional network. Rather, it means that the subnetworks contribute to the overall operations for internetworking. Stated another way, the subnetworks comprise an internetwork or an internet.
