Internetworking is the sharing of computer resources by connecting the computers through a number of communications networks. The networks can be public or private networks; they can be local or wide area networks.
Internetworking is essential to the efficient operations of communications networks for a number of reasons, all of which revolve around an idea called packet containment[1] First, it is impossible to operate one large, monolithic network throughout an enterprise or a collection of enterprises.
