SUMMARY

Internetworking is the sharing of computer resources by connecting the computers through communications networks. These networks can be public or private networks; they can be local or wide area networks. Route discovery is the process of finding the “best” route in the internetworking (and routing) domain. Internetworking and route discovery are essential to the efficient operations of communications networks.

The internetworking unit is called a bridge, router, or a gateway. Bridges are designed to operate with LANs, and routers are designed to operate with LANs or WANs. The gateway may perform packet relaying through networks and also may act as a protocol converter.
