INTRODUCTION
This chapter introduces internetworking and route discovery concepts, and explains why these operations are important to communications networks. The separate processes of forwarding and route advertising are defined, as well as the role of routing domains. The layered protocol model is used to clarify where the route discovery protocols are placed in relation to this model. The chapter concludes with a brief look at the routing protocols that are the subject of this book.
