Long before I knew him, my friend and mentor Greg Campbell was a hardworking executive for Sears, Roebuck & Company. In the 1980s he worked his way up in real estate–related management positions within Sears. At the time, Sears was into a lot of businesses beyond retailing. Coldwell Banker Real Estate, Allstate Insurance, and Discover Card, for example, were part of Sears.

About 1990, Coldwell Banker was a billion-dollar business that was losing a lot of money. The leadership of Sears asked Greg to take on the role of executive vice president of Coldwell Banker. He accepted, and took on the huge responsibility of running the entire business.
