Preface

On 9/11 the world watched while transportation became a weapon. Always previously considered a means of connecting people and creating commerce, transportation suddenly became a weapon of war, with civilian aircraft loaded with passengers used as missiles. Personal freedom and privacy have become a tradeoff with secure transportation, as airline passengers remove their shoes and submit to full-body scanners to enhance security.

In 2005 Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans, made roads along the Gulf Coast inaccessible, destroyed bridges and ports, and closed pipelines. The effects were felt not only by the stranded Gulf Coast residents, but also by Midwestern farmers who could not export their harvested corn and East Coast drivers ...
