A Conversation Is a Dialogue, Not a Broadcast Message
I explained the sender–receiver model to a dear friend last night who was trying to have a conversation with her son, but it wasn’t working.
Sandra’s grown son was having a tough time finding a job. She’d sent him a lengthy e-mail—firstly, e-mails should never be too long and never be swamped with multiple question marks and exclamation marks, or start with “Do you need a therapist.” The e-mail was a few pages long, a generous scroll down to the end. Anyway, surprisingly, or not, she hadn’t had a response from him for nearly a week and wanted to e-mail him more information. I took a calming breath and explained.
