Organizing this book presented many challenges. Much of the material has been presented in some way before, but always for a different purpose. We have aimed to tell a complete story, in three sections. The first section of the book, Chapters 1 to 3, is primarily concerned with establishing what is already known about music production. Obviously, this is a vast subject, so we focus on the big picture: paradigms, workflows, classifications and so on. Chapter 1 introduces the subject of Intelligent Music Production (IMP), defines the field and gives a summary of its history.
