2.1 Introduction

Management systems enable organisations to plan and achieve their objectives. Numerous studies have been carried out to determine the impact of management systems on business performance. Often, certification standards such as ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards have been considered as management systems. ISO standards are not management systems, as they are merely criteria against which the effectiveness of management systems is measured.
