4.1 Common channel signalling (CCS)

Digital transmission and switching allied to SPC provided a very powerful tool with which to realize integrated networks. It is a tool, however, that is largely ineffective unless the switching machines, the exchanges, can communicate freely. Traditionally interexchange communication was limited to the information required to set up, charge, supervise and release calls, and this signalling was conducted over the same path as the conversation to which it related.
