2.3. Database Design Example
This section provides a simple overview of how conceptual schemas may be implemented in relational database systems. The topic is covered in detail in later chapters. Consider a company that is based in an English-speaking country, but carries out some of its business overseas. Some of its employees may speak languages other than English, which can help when dealing with foreign customers. The company wishes to move from a manual to an automated personnel record system. Prototype examples of some online personnel record forms are shown in Figure 2.5. For simplicity, only a few details are displayed.
