WHILE TRADITIONAL CARPENTRY, welding, and other means of scenic production are still very much alive and a vital part of scenic fabrication in the 21st century, digitally directed fabrication methods are becoming more widespread in our industry. Most professional scene shops, and many educational institutions, are using CNC or Computer Numeric Control technologies on an everyday basis to compliment the work of their skilled craftspeople. The key to successfully deploying CNC tools is using the technology to reinforce the work of a craftsperson, not to replace it and turn the scene shop into an assembly plant.
