CHAPTER 12SHOP EQUIPMENT

IT’S DIFFICULT TO explain exactly what scenery construction is like in contrast to other areas of carpentry. You might think that woodworking in the theatre has more in common with cabinet making than it does with most home construction jobs. Cabinet work is very exacting, and it results in freestanding units that are transported to the work site for installation. The cabinets are assembled inside an already existing structure and have many moving parts. Scenery is also very exacting and must be movable at least from the shop to the theatre and quite often, from one theatre to another. While the processes and practices are vastly different from each other, many of the tools and pieces of equipment are the same.
