WHEN THE WORD hardware was coined several centuries ago, it literally meant things made from metal, which was harder than the wood that carpenters used to build most things. Many hardware items that were once made of steel or brass are now plastic instead, but the vast majority of hardware is still metallic in nature. Thousands of different pieces of hardware are available for use in dozens of different construction crafts. Some of the hardware in this section was developed especially to build and rig scenery, but most of it is primarily used to build things other than theatre scenery. Stage carpenters have found creative ways to use hardware to suit their needs.
