CHAPTER 9

HAND TOOLS

ONCE UPON A TIME, when speaking to my class about tools, I would begin my remarks with the statement that tools are really just an extension of our own bodies. And then continue with how our fingers can grasp things but a wrench or a pair of pliers can do it with more force, which is a normal humanistic approach to the subject. One year as I was standing before the class prepared to say just that, a student remarked, “You’re not going to tell us that tools are an extension of our own bodies, are you?” and of course I said no. At least until now. I guess I wasn’t the first person to think of that. Even so, it is good to approach a technical subject like tools by seeing how they relate to human beings.
