THE MODERN INTEREST in thrust theatres might well trace its origins back to the 1950s when theatres like those at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, and the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis emerged. These theatres were two of the first, but were among many others formed by companies of actors who were interested in creating a new type of emotional realism on the stage. They became the first large regional theatres, ones not in New York, but rather in other regions of the country.
