In the last chapter I referred to the complex, macro changes occurring all around us as transformational changes, which in turn call for personal, organizational, and societal transformation. This is not simply a euphemism for “big.” Let’s stake out the boundaries of what is meant here by the nature of transformative change, since this is the most profound and potentially challenging territory of change, individually as well as collectively, and the type of change with which most people, coaches, and organizations have the least experience. And let’s do this by contrasting transformation with two other types of change more common to individuals and groups, standardization and continuous improvement.
