Customize the InDesign Preferences?

Press Command-K (PC: Ctrl-K) to bring up the Preferences dialog. You can also access it by going to InDesign (PC: Edit) > Preferences > General. There are other options listed in the menu, but I suggest starting with General. You can access all the other options on the left side of the dialog that opens.
