SOPs: The Foundation of Houdini

Modeling with Surface Operators (SOPs) means that you don’t build a model – you build a process for making a model. That makes your model procedural, and that means building models that can change. They might change because the director wants triangles instead of circles, or they might change because motion and deformation is built right into them (like a writhing snake, for example, or a flapping flag). When you work this way, you get to know lots of little tricks that are the result of combining a few operations in a certain way. These idioms are useful shortcuts to quickly building and changing your models.
