High temperature superconductors (HTS) in accelerator systems

Abstract:
The first major-scale industrial application of high temperature superconductor (HTS) materials was in accelerators as current leads for low temperature superconductor (LTS) magnets. This chapter highlights the challenges concerning the use of HTS materials for various accelerator elements such as dipole accelerator magnets, focusing elements and insertion devices. HTSs on the market are evaluated in the context of accelerator technology. The most promising application is as inserts in high-field dipole magnets and as focusing elements in high radiation environments.
