Near my home runs a river called the Blacksmith Fork. A favorite place to ride my horse is along an escarpment that overlooks the river. I love to sit in the saddle and watch the water roll over the endless number of rocks at the river’s bottom. Every place the water hits a rock, it deviates from its natural course and temporarily goes a different direction. Each time it changes course, it collides with water trying to get around a different rock. The overall effect of this enormously tumultuous cascade of frustrated water is grand to watch but almost impossible to tame into anything useful.
