Why is it that for some people any type of change is stressful? Whether it’s a disruption in their morning routine, reorganizing the items on their desk, unplanned visitors, or upgrading a computer software program. Any type of change that may require accommodation becomes almost unbearable for some. Yet, we know that change is all around us. The rate of change today is unlike ever before. Adapting to the changes in our lives has become a normal part of living. Likewise, there are events that for some people create a lot of anxiety, but for others seem quite exciting and even fun.

As well, there are many people who find life is full of challenges. They like the idea of trying new things, taking risks, or even sensation-seeking. They willingly seek out opportunities and rise to the challenge. Sometimes we are presented with challenging situations that land on our doorstep unexpectedly. How is it that some people successfully confront the challenges they encounter and just keep on moving with life? It’s as if they fall down, get right back up, dust themselves off, and continue walking.

When we talk about the challenge mindset in hardiness terms, we mean having the expectation that life is unpredictable and that changes will enhance our personal development. We see demanding situations as exciting and stimulating rather than threatening, ...
