Restructuring the Board

Thursday, December 10, 9:12 a.m. . . .

Clarke Gardner poked his head into Barton’s office and rapped on the door frame. “Krish said you wanted me for something, Jim?”

Barton, at his desk, looked up from what he’d been reading.

“Oh, hi, Clarke. Come in for a minute.”

Gardner came in and sat down on the couch. Barton got up and closed the door, which prompted a quizzical expression from the CFO. Barton settled into a chair across from Gardner, attempting nonchalance, with modest success.

“I’m meeting with Ron Haas later to go over some board matters,” Barton explained. “I need you to get me some information.”

“Sure, no problem,” said Gardner, opening a notebook, unsheathing a pen. “What do you need?”
