“The only thing I’m asking for—the only thing—is approval of this year’s merit pay plan for our employees,” said Jack Bruun, the senior HR executive at SMA. “The checks are overdue. Everyone below the CEO level has signed off. If I can get your signature, Jim, then we can close the books on this and everyone can get their money.” Bruun’s tone of voice communicated exasperation.
More than seemed warranted by the situation, Barton thought. “I know. I’ll sign,” he said. “But I’m glad we’ve had this discussion. I’m grateful to you, Jack, and to you, Rajit, for helping me think through these issues.”
Bruun said nothing. He obviously didn’t feel at all grateful ...
