“May I take your order?” the waitress asks.
Neither Barton nor Jenkins responds to the young waitress. She waits. Luce looks across the table at his dinner companions.
Jenkins holds her glasses out of the way, studying the menu beneath them. Barton adjusts his own glasses to see through them better. Luce waves the waitress closer.
“These older folks,” he whispers when she leans over, “need a bit more time.” He winks, waggles his eyebrows, and places thumb and forefinger at the side of his head, as if positioning his own imaginary glasses. “I fear,” continues Luce, “that they may have also forgotten their hearing aids.”
