The interior of an executive jet. The drone of engines barely penetrates its soundproofed walls. Luce lies on his back on the floor, arms outstretched, eyes closed, absorbing flight vibrations into his body. He balances a soda can on his chest.
“So let me get this straight,” he says. “You both dated her?”
Luce asks this question without opening his eyes. Barton, in a plush, ultramodern swivel chair, holding an expensive beer, doesn’t answer right away. Goldman, sitting on a couch, places his drink—it looks like a martini—on a side table.
“Yes,” Barton says finally, “we both dated her, at different times.”
“Whose was she first?” asks ...
