3. Control

The perception of control is closely linked to our happiness. Psychological studies have shown that if we believe we have more control we feel more content, even if our actual levels of control are unchanged. For example, a recent investigation into stress and commuting discovered that having little control over how you get to work can create a sense of ‘impotence’, which dramatically increases heart rates and the release of cortisol – a hormone related to stress.
