Abstract: Neoplatonic political thought has recently earned much interest among historians of philosophy. This contribution examines some Neoplatonic ideas on rhetoric against this background. Whereas some Middle Platonists, influenced by Stoicism, regarded rhetoric as a philosophical discipline, the Neoplatonists, who followed Aristotle in considering the logical disciplines as an organon instead of a part of philosophy, removed it from the curriculum. In Neoplatonic ethics and politics rhetoric is discussed in the framework of the so-called grades of virtue.
