Abstract: Marcus Fabius Quintilianus is among the major Latin teachers in Europe. His Institutio oratoria had a formative and lasting effect already during his lifetime, the first century AD, but continued to do so in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the modern age. The reason for this success is that it is a systematic and consistent collection of ancient rhetoric that encompasses and critically inspects both educational worlds—Greek and Latin—and intensively discusses them.
