Accidents can happen in industrial processes; spillages, releases of gas and explosions which by and large are contained within the premises. The energy industries are no exception, but the consequences can be vastly different. The grounding of a tanker and the subsequent release of crude oil into the water can kill fish and sea birds, and destroy the livelihood of a coastal community dependant on fishing.

Electricity supply can be cut for several reasons. A lightning strike on an overhead power line or a wind generator, the latter a quite common ocurrence, could knock out a circuit breaker, which might reconnect quickly.
