TYPES OF COMMUNICATION IN THE MARITIME MOBILE SERVICE
Distress, Urgency, and Safety Communications traffic consists of all messages relating to the immediate assistance required by the ship in DISTRESS, including Search And Rescue (SAR) communications and on-scene communications. Distress traffic must be followed by all stations, even if they are not assisting, until it is clear that assistance is being rendered.
Public Correspondence is correspondence between ship stations and shore stations of a commercial nature, for example radiotelegrams and radiotelephone calls.
