Introduction

Abstract

This chapter lays out the key terms and types of businesses which come together along a supply chain. This includes various US government organizations which regulate supply chain security programs. Global supply chain management is defined and related to the concept of logistics management. The layout of international borders and ports of entry are discussed including various choke points. The impact of global supply chain management on the US economy is also examined. Two important themes are introduced which will be expanded in subsequent chapters: the dual role of government as both partner and police in global supply chain security.
