18. The Most Important Question in Life

Given the discussion of early childhood development in the previous chapter, we come to what I think is the single most important question in life. “Will you ever be anything more than a vessel transmitting the genes and VABEs of previous generations on to the next?” This is the underlying question that faces the young woman who came into my office as described in the last chapter.
In effect, I think this question determines the quality of being an adult. “When, if ever, will you transcend the genes and VABEs that were given to you by your parents and choose when you are no longer a defenseless child what you want to keep, lose, and/or add to who you are?”2 Only then, I say, does one “become a person” ...
