What Is make world?
Rebuilding your entire system is certainly a more low-level, less “prepackaged” way of upgrading than simply dropping in a CD, but it's in accordance with the FreeBSD way of doing things: a sensibility that building your binaries from pure source is the only way to ensure that your system will truly be compatible with your hardware and your setup. It does involve a lot of steps and a fair amount of risk. However, the regimented structure of FreeBSD helps to mitigate the risk and allows us to enjoy the advantages that this method provides us.
